Tracing / Traces: Architecture and the Archive 2025
On Saturday, December 6, 2025, MAS Context will organize the ninth edition of our annual Tracing / Traces event offering a behind-the-scenes look at selected items from the Art Institute of Chicago’s Ryerson & Burnham Art and Architecture Archives.
Five architects and designers will select items from the collection and discuss them in relationship to their practice, the discipline, and/or society. Nathaniel Parks, Tigerman McCurry Director of the Art Institute of Chicago Archives, will provide a brief introduction to the archives. Participants include:

Editors Shirley Surya and Li Hua of How Modern join the Bartlett’s Guang Yu Ren in conversation, followed by a response from Azadeh Zaferani. Together, they explore architecture in China (1949–1979), challenging assumptions about socialist modernity through new perspectives on agency and design.
