Weeded Ground

Weeded Soil is a study of foreign life forms that construct Central Park from soil (Guano) to trees (Persian Ironwood) and how they were landscaped to displace and cover the lives of Seneca Village. The project builds off the archeological discovery of artifacts and pollen from Seneca Village, excavated to establish an indigeneity of people and their relationship to land. Pollen extraction leads to an understanding of the native ecology and cultivation practices that have been replaced with foreign soils and trees. Specifically the weeds discovered were a sign of gardening and medicinal use. These weeds continue to grow within Central Park becoming a symbol of the indigeneity buried in the landscaped soil. Weeded Ground is an ephemeral memorial that uses the de-rooted weeds and transforms them into an object that connects them back to Seneca Village. The project was developed within the context of the Advanced Architectural Design (AAD) Program at Columbia, under the mentorship of Paulo Tavares.
