Watery Encounters at the Urban-Rural Interface
Joanna von Essen

The focus of this project is on the water-related, small-scale infrastructure of Beiyang Town (Zhejiang Province, China). This area can be described using the concept of the Urban-Rural Interface, referring to a region that is either still undergoing urbanisation or has developed into an independent spatial, social, and ecological intermediate form. This design project addresses the question of how interspecies encounters can be created at the Urban-Rural Interface using water related, small scale infrastructure as a spatial node. Derived from the idea of integrating human and non-human habitats, a strategy was developed to connect the concept of Micro-Regeneration primarily used in urban contexts for humans with the conceptual framework of Wildlife Corridor. As part of this, two design toolkits as well as a concrete design example were developed. The aim of the project is to show, that urban-rural interface (URI) planning, when informed by considerations of non-human needs, can shift from posing a threat to biodiversity to becoming an element in its conservation. This thesis was developed within the context of the Dual Degree Master program in Urban Design and Architecture at TU Berlin and Tongji Shanghai.
