Honourable mention / July Call for Drawings

The Wantsum Citrus project is an initiative in orange orchard farming in the UK, reducing the reliance on food imports outside the country and upcycling food waste into paper. The rapidly changing climate poses challenges for farmers in southern European countries, threatening supermarkets, and consumers alike with food insecurity - a novelty in 2023. Rammed chalk walls sourced from underground geothermal tunnels create the thermal mass for growing orange espalier trees. Inflatable “umbrella” greenhouses respond to adverse weather and inflate, safeguarding the orange espaliers. Each inflatable greenhouse utilizes a drying tower with passive heat to convert food waste into paper.
