PPP128 (Plants Pipes People 128)
Flora Ng & Val Flânon
Located on an industrial lot near Harlem, PPP (Plants, Pipes, People) 128 transforms a former brewery horse stable into a 42-bedroom housing complex with a self-sufficient water system. Drawing inspiration from Yves Lion’s Domus Demain and the history of plumbing labour in New York City, the project enables residents to use water to perform rituals of care and maintenance as communal hearth, cultivating a culture of shared responsibility where utility becomes an act of conscious care for the infrastructure that keeps our bodies sheltered, healthy, and warm. The project was developed within the context of Core III - Hilary Sample Studio at Columbia GSAPP, 2023.
