3rd winner | August Call for Drawings.

Drawn on a university project trip to Utulaelae Village in Upolu, Samoa, earlier this year, this drawing seeks to conceptualise the proverb Paopao Aitu, the Ghost/Spirit Canoe. Due to climate change impacting the rise of sea levels in Samoa and among the Pacific region, people are urged to relocate communities to higher grounds. Yet this leaves an impactful issue: Do you move the dead alongside you or leave them to the waters? The aim of the project is to develop a structure/vehicle to relocate the dead - considering the spaces related to fanuaoti and how they function in a modern context. Paopao Aitu aims to act as a fluid structure throughout the journey of souls. The project was developed within the context of the University of Auckland.
