The project explores the potential of using Typha domingensis, an invasive reed growing along the banks of the Senegal river, for the development of local architecture. This initiative addresses the environmental challenges posed by intensive agriculture and the Diama dam, promoting a sustainable approach to construction. Through experiments, a catalogue of construction methods using typha was developed, leading to innovative architectural solutions. The project involves local communities in a 4-step programme for typha cultivation and utilisation, aiming to transform the local economy and architectural landscape. This approach envisions a city where alternative building materials symbolise progress, not poverty or archaism.
