Nogales Residential Tower
CÚRE & PENABAD Studio

Guatemala City, like many other Latin American capitals, extended itself towards the outskirts following World War II. This model produced a decentralized city with suburban environments largely constructed of detached single-family homes. In recent years, this development trend has begun to reverse itself with new models of urban living emerging to define the contemporary city.

In response to this, the Nogales Tower rises 100 meters and houses 70 residential units of varying sizes (1,200 to 2,400 sq.ft). The compact plan (100 x 120 meters) produces a building with minimal circulation and maximum access to light and views. The project seeks to distinguish itself from many of the generic buildings immediately surrounding the site by creating a sculpted, terraced, silhouette that is instantly recognizable. The architectural expression for the tower takes its cues from both Spanish and Mayan building traditions, abstracting and simplifying these elements to create a new building that is rooted in an architectural language of the region.
