This project is the development of eight urban villas in currently vacant or underutilized sites around downtown Flushing in Queens, New York. With the immigration of singles for work and the existence of large traditional Asian family units, two housing sizes—studio and 5-room units—remain in short supply here. The diptych shows how the design can accommodate varying sizes to meet this demand. The shared gallery connected to individual housing units on the perimeter of the building can be adapted according to the resident’s needs, expanding or contracting for more public or private uses as their family unit changes. The project was developed at the Yale School of Architecture.
