In 2019, four years after the 2015 Milan Expo and two years before the 2021 Alpine World Ski Championships in Cortina, Italy won the bid to host the 2026 Winter Olympics, with events scheduled across Milan, Cortina, Bormio, Livigno, Predazzo, Tesero, Anterselva/Antholz, and Verona. Spanning two regions (Lombardy and Veneto) and two autonomous provinces (Trento and Bolzano), the Games will be dispersed across an unusually large geographical area. According to the Italian delegation and the International Olympic Committee (IOC), this distribution would make the event more "sustainable" by maximising the use of existing sports facilities and supporting "green" mobility. Yet, such claims overlook significant transportation issues and connectivity gaps between Italy’s mountainous regions and urban centres. This large-scale event — requiring nearly a decade of infrastructure planning for just three weeks of competitions — has been branded as "the most sustainable Games ever." Giochi Preziosi/Precious Games is a first look at the complex realities surrounding the 2026 Winter Olympics, examining their impact on the alpine regions and in Milan.
