Giant Diorama Composition: National Congress and Itamaraty Palace
Ines Tazi
The diptych is part of a project initiated around my observations while visiting Brasilia’s more and less known administrative landmarks. It comments on the incorporation of fragments of the Amazon flora into the recently built capital, hundreds of kilometers away in a very distinct ecosystem. Reminiscent of dioramas and centuries old exhibitions of catalogued species, these indoor gardens were carefully composed and displayed into dim bureaucratic interiors, and appear to perform as vitrines of national capital. The project proposes a series of scenarios in which the fossilised, perspectival and disproportionate character of the city interacts with the invasive and disorienting character of the Amazon.
