On November 23, 2023, the Computational Compost project was inaugurated at the Tabakalera center in Donostia-San Sebastián (Spain), addressing the environmental impact of data storage and proposing a synergy between technology and ecology. It is carried out in collaboration with the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC) where the world's sixth quantum supercomputer, IBM Quantum System One, will be located.

The work focuses on the energy generated by data computing and storage systems supporting biological processes. It includes a prototype, which can now be visited for the first time, using the heat emitted by computers running simulations of the origin of the universe to power a vermicomposting machine with live worms and microorganisms that thrive on this energy to create fertile soil which sustains life in its most primal form.
