The project investigates fences as material legacy of enclosures and colonialism within the context of North Kensington. Fences are spatial mechanisms which define an "outside" and an "inside", yet their role extends beyond their physical presence; they activate an otherness within society. Hence, a methodology is proposed for building common spaces by manipulating fences as an alternative community engagement process which foregrounds repair, self-governance, and justice. This image depicts a design for retrofitting existing barriers. The design subverts the barriers’ connotations of control, instead activating it by accommodating different societal groups, featuring handrails, resting spots, children’s apparatus and celebrations of local graffiti.
